Dead Lemons edition by Finn Bell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

One of the best books I've read in a long time. Seriously good, and so much more than a thriller. The thriller plot is fantastic and keeps you guessing; the pace is perfect, switching from present immediate peril to what led up to the character's predicament flawlessly. But the thriller part of the book is just that - only the tip of the iceberg, just part of the story. The rest is filled with thought provoking prose dealing with what makes people tick. Philosophy and psychology are intertwined as the protagonist tries to figure out how his life went awry and what he can do to fix it. I loved the therapy sessions almost more than the thriller part of the story. Set in one of my favorite places - New Zealand - which was a bonus - the author includes glimpses into Kiwi and Maori culture. I don't have enough words of praise. Just superb. I am buying his other book right now.

Oh, and don't skip the end notes - I agree with Mr. Bell, Firefly should NEVER have been cancelled!

Dead Lemons edition by Finn Bell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

While the initial plot of the book was interesting, I found the characters were contrived and not very believable. As a psych major and coming from a family of therapists, I found the "therapy sessions" to be a bit unorthodox and slightly bogus. The ending, while it seemed neatly wrapped up, wasn't written very well. It was too drawn out, and in an attempt to be mysterious and keep the reader guessing, just annoyed me. I found myself wishing the author would just get on with it. It was too convoluted when a simple explanation would have been better. The ending felt like the author was trying too hard to give a good twist. I would have preferred a simple, neatly tied up ending than all the explanations that are supposed to make you go "gasp!" I wasn't a fan. I don't think I'd read anything from this author again.

WOW!
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much with this book. I don’t know why. But, boy am I glad I was wrong. SO WRONG!

This book begins with main character, Finn Bell (yes, of the same name as the author) hanging upside down from a rock face, still connected to his wheelchair. Pushed from the cliff by a madman—who made the mistake of hanging on too long and tumbled down right after him…

I WANT TO TELL SO MUCH MORE!!!

But, I won’t. I hate spoilers so I won’t ruin anything for you, the future reader.

This book grabbed me from page one, word one, and it would not let go! The story line is fascinating and exciting and tension-filled… I could get very wordy with my enthusiasm for this book…but I won’t. Let me just say, it’s amazing!

The characters are well developed and 3-dimensional. They came to life for me, jumping off the pages like real people, living their lives right in front of me. I became a fly on the wall and I loved buzzing around this story!

Mr. Bell tells it in a series of flashbacks and present day scenes that are deftly written and well executed. So much so, that at this point, I don’t know if this book is a work of fiction or an auto-biography.

I can’t say too much, without giving away clues to the mystery. But, I will say this the ending surprised me (which is often hard to do) and I LOVED IT!

Oh, how I wish I could elaborate on this story. How I wish I could describe the bad guys and what they’re up to and the good guys and what they go through. But, I’m afraid even a subtle description might give something away and I don’t want to do that.

READ THIS BOOK!

It’s fascinating!
I would probably never have found my way to this book if it had not been offered free in exchange for a review. I have learned over time that it is wise to read books that were written by authors from different countries and about different countries and environments. While I have read all of Bryce Courtenay's Books, including those set in Australia, I don't think I have ever read a book that were set exclusively in New Zealand. In addition to being a very well-written and enjoyable mystery, it was very informative. The addendum at the end of the book elaborating on some of the important things that Bell included in the novel added greatly to expanding my knowledge of the country and its people. I thought that all of the characters were very well developed; as is usually the case in well-developed characters, they had flaws, which added to the realism of the book and the characters. I particularly enjoyed Betty because I am a clinical psychologist. I found her approach to psychotherapy delightful despite the abruptness of her manner. There was much that she said that rang true with me. The book offered a fresh and helpful perspective on dealing with mistakes in one's life and was disability. I am not sure that I would ever use the metaphor of "dead lemons" since my approach to therapy tends to be more gentle. I am looking forward to reading his second book, which I have already purchased. I suppose I could say a lot more in support of the book. I guess I would rather devote this time to reading the next one. I am glad to have been introduced to a new author.
